This beautiful elven device "...was held by the the descendants of Idril, preserved from Gondolin & descending from Eärendil to Númenor, whence It was saved by Elendil, and taken to Gondor."
Idril was the daughter of the King of Gondolin, Turgon, and mother of Eärendil, one of Middle-earth's greatest heroes, and forefather of both Elrond and Aragorn. It's studded with cornflowers, the blue jewels of the golden corn fields.
I am fascinated by the back history that Tolkien wrote for this specific piece of artwork, which appears in the story not just as a design but as a physical artifact that survives some of the greatest calamities in Middle-earth's history.
I wreathed this piece with ivy, which is the symbol of memory in the flower language. I like to imagine this would be hanging in some half forgotten courtyard of Minas Tirith, waiting for the heirs of Elendil to return.
Upcycled hand-carved piece, painted in jewel bright metallic colours. Handmade upcycled leather leaves and natural ivy vine.
Ø of carved roundel, 20 cm. Total ø ~ 30 cm
