Lumen Naturae

A splendid concept brought to us by a client, and developed by Fauno into an image and woodcarving, this is a yin yang of light and dark magical creatures, the unicorn and the kelpie, both with deep roots in Scottish folklore. Though in the traditional tales the kelpie is described as a shape-shifting white horse, we made him black to capture his demonic nature, but a black alive with iridescent highlights. 

We named the piece after a beautiful quote by C. G. Jung that encapsulates some of Fauno's ideas about light and darkness. 

"They [the seekers after truth] discover that in the very darkness of nature a light is hidden, a little spark without which the darkness would not be darkness. … The light from above made the darkness still darker; but the lumen naturae is the light of the darkness itself, which illuminates its own darkness, and this light the darkness comprehends. Therefore it turns blackness into brightness......"

The piece has a 360° hanging cord at the back that allows to hang it unicorn up or unicorn down, at any angle.
